The Color of Belonging (weaving the fabric of urban life).

This collection took shape in late 2017 during a residency with the Jiwar Making Neighbourhoods project in Barcelona. Found materials, textiles, paper, thread, layers. Digital recordings Conversations, crowds, spaces, moments.

Hundreds of thousands of peaceful protestors marched for Catalan independence in one of the biggest mass demonstrations regarding Spain’s unity. It’s been called a constitutional crisis. Pots clanged and echoed throughout balconies after dark. Barcelona friends and books told of a long-standing spirit of democracy and independence, reflecting the post-Franco era.

I’m grateful for support for this project along with four others this year, with a grant from Jiwar Creation and Society/City of Barcelona Multicultural Affairs. This was the fifth year of their Making Neighbourhood Project in which 15 artists have participated from around the world. An Exhibition involving the Gracia community took place (with artists Elif Gulen and Isidor Fernandez) as well as civic engagement as we talked with people about the changing city.
