The Magic Hour
The Magic Hour, Columbia Art Collaboration Lab, New York
Examining gentrification in Harlem as a starting point, The Magic Hour reveals deeper less tangible aspects of urbanization, including displacement and social capital embedded within communities. The cross-disciplinary team conducted research with sound, photography and sculptural interpretations of urban spaces. These field samples reflected the physical and social environment, ranging from community gardens to rituals such as curbside domino games. Recording these poetic essences within the backdrop of Manhattan revealed an underlying resilience and private comfort zones within the larger public sphere. The Magic Hour findings were presented with video footage, soundscape and performance as an immersive experience -- an unfinished story for the audience to unravel in the context of their own lives.
